Students at Pamlico County Primary School celebrated Earth Day on April 22, 2009.  The anchor students on the morning news show have been giving students tips about taking good care of our Earth.  These have included turning out the lights when you leave a room, turning off the water when you are brushing your teeth, taking a shower-not a bath, pick up liter and throw it away, recycling and many more.   In honor of Earth Day, each classroom had special activities lined up related to our Earth.  Pre-K students planted a tree in honor of Earth Day.  Students took turns sharing shovels in order to dig the hole.  Many ended up with dirt all over themselves but they had a ball.  Other pre-K students when it wasn't their turn to dig enjoyed picking flowers, making clover necklaces and digging in the dirt.  Pre-K students really enjoyed Earth Day.

Wynne Paul's kindergarten classroom decided to plant a garden to celebrate Earth Day.  Each student got to plant a plant in the classroom garden located outside their back door.  The plants included:  Vinca, Lambs Ear, and Daffodil bulbs. The students then had their picture taken with the globe and wrote sentences about what they did to celebrate Earth Day.  Jennifer Littleton and Marie Smith's classrooms went outside to enjoy what natural treasures they could find.  The students returned with bags full of earthly treasures.

Gina Potter's first grade classroom enjoying making birdfeeders out of pinecones, peanut butter and birdseed.  They also decorated Earth Day hats which they wore all day.  When they went outside to hang their birdfeeder it just so happens that a bird's nest was hanging in the tree they chose.  The students quickly decided that they needed to hang another birdfeeder out in that tree.

1st and 2nd grade students spent some time in the afternoon picking up trash to make the campus more beautiful.   When asked what they think about people littering, Faith said, "she doesn't think people should do it because it is against the law." Angel chimed in saying that people should take care of our environment because it is the only place we have to live."  A wide variety of trash was found; even Easter eggs from the Easter egg hunts held before Spring Break.

Donna Rice's class is now collecting aluminum cans until the end of the year.  If you have cans that need recycling, please bring them to our school.  They sell the cans at the end of the year and use the money to purchase a library book for the school.
