Monday, March 2nd was Read Across America Day at Pamlico County Primary School.  Read Across America Day is a day to celebrate reading.  It is celebrated on March 2nd because it was the wonderful children's author, Dr. Seuss' birthday.  On this day, we invited guest readers to share their love of reading with the students of PCPS.  Guest readers included:  community members, girl scouts, Fred A. Anderson students, PCMS students, PCHS students, Board of Education employees, volunteers, parents and grand parents who read with our students.  We asked everyone to wear red and Dr. Seuss hats if they had them.

During the day, we had a special reading time from 9:30-10:30 a.m. where the whole school was reading.  Sixty-seven students visited our school along with many other wonderful volunteers.  Our PTO provided refreshments for our guests after they read.  Each student in the school received a Read Every Day bookmark.  Our volunteer readers received a bookmark and Readers are Leaders pencil.

We also had The Cat in the Hat and little Cat in the Hat who visited our classrooms.  Thank you to Mrs. Melissa Dixon and Annie from first grade for filling those roles.  While the Cat in the Cat duo visited classrooms, they handed out bookmarks and did drawings for Dr. Seuss prizes.  Each classroom received a Dr. Seuss notepad to write their favorite Dr. Seuss books on and post outside their door.

Our Pre-K classrooms made their own special book covers like the book, The Shape of Me and Other Stuff to help celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday.  The Pre-K teachers took the silhouette of each student and shrunk it down to fit on the character for the cover.  Then each student picked out an item to go on their cover to go along with their silhouette.  These book covers are lining our long corridor which leads to our special classes and lunchroom.  Be sure to check them out.

We also celebrated Dr. Seuss on our morning news show.  Our student anchors wore Dr. Seuss hats and we had several pre-school students share their Shape of Me and Other Stuff book covers on the news show.  After the morning news show, we used our video distribution system to read The Cat in the Hat to the entire school.  Throughout the week, several other Dr. Seuss books were read to the students through a program called KidThing, which allowed teachers to download four Dr. Seuss books for free during the month of March.   Here is the link for teachers who would like to download free Dr. Seuss books during the month of March:   http://www.kidthing.com/nea/

Special thanks to Jane Whitley (FAA Media Coordinator), Julie Comerdalle (FAA 5th grade teacher), Catherine Revels (FAA 5th grade teacher), Kim Prescott (PCMS Media Coordinator) and Annette Brinson (PCHS English Teacher) for bringing their students to our school.  Also big thanks to: Kim Prescott, Jane Whitley, Debbie Roach and Debby Hollowell for the wonderful pictures of the event!  Be sure to check out our picture slideshow below.

We thank everyone who helped make the PCPS Read Across America 2009 a great success and we look forward to next year's Read Across America 2010.  Maybe next year, you can join us in being a guest reader and join in all the fun!
