Notice to Former Students in PCHS Graduating Classes of 1981 through 2009 Concerning (1) Elimination of Competency and Computer Skills Graduation Requirements and (2) Opportunity to Receive High School Diplomas

On July 1, 2009, the General Assembly passed Senate Bill 202/S.L. 2009-451, thus ending the graduation requirements for the North Carolina Competency and Computer Skills Tests.

Any student who was enrolled in a graduating class from 1981 through 2009 and met all state and local board requirements for a diploma, except for passing the competency test(s) and/or computer skills test(s), may request a diploma from Pamlico County High School.

The following steps should be followed to request a diploma:

  1. Contact Mrs. Peggy Cayton in the Pamlico County High School Guidance Department to obtain a copy of your high school transcript and the Diploma Petition Form. School personnel will let you know if they have your transcript or who you must contact for a copy if the record is no longer maintained at the school.

  2. You will need to present proof of your identity to school personnel. Take with you a valid picture ID (such as your driver's license), your Social Security number, and your current address and contact information.

School personnel will check to ensure that you have earned credit in all courses required for graduation at the time that your diploma was withheld because of a testing deficiency. You will be contacted to let you know if you qualify for a diploma or if your request has been denied. Please allow up to 30 business days to process your request.

Requests for diplomas that meet the requirements will be honored only during a five-year window spanning from July 1, 2009 through July 1, 2014.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Peggy Cayton in the Pamlico County High School Guidance Department at 252-745-3151, extension 528.
